Rapid Transit Systems in Pakistan

Yesterday, (on 17th of June 2013)annual budget report was presented in provincial assemblies of three of Pakistani provinces, Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PMLN) has government in Punjab, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has government in Sindh province. PML(N) also had previous government in Punjab and it started and successfully completed Lahore Bus Rapid Transit System. The system is currently in running and providing transportation services to the people of Lahore across the city.

Lahore Bus Rapid Transit System started service

BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) Lahore finally inaugurated on 10th of February 2013. A day since the project was started being constructed eleven months ago, people started waiting for this day. Rs. 30 billion project completed in 11 months time including around 8 kilometers elevated track, and 27 stop overs.

Lahore Bus Rapid Transit System

27 kilometers long Lahore Bus Rapid Transit System first of its kind in the country kick started in early 2012. Prime Minister Punjab, Mian Shehbaz Sharif laid the foundation stone of mega project which will have track from Gajumata to Shahdra on Ferozpur Road which passes from center of Lahore. Estimated cost of project is 30 billion rupees much lower than rumored 70-80 billion rupees. According to newspaper, service will start on February 10, 2013. Project starts from Gajumata, a nearby town on the southern boundary of Lahore, mega city. Traveling on the 27 km long project will be free for first month of its inauguration and PKR 10 will be charged afterwards which is by far the lowest fare to travel in the city. Even 1 km traveling is charge at least PKR 10 local transporters.

M4 Faisalabad – Multan Motorway

19 August 2009 was the day when ground breaking ceremony of M4 Faisalabad-Multan Motorway took place by the hands of the then Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani. Initial planned cost of M4 was 42 Billion PKR. The project was separated in four sections:

  1. FaisalabadGojra (58 km)
  2. Gojra-Shorkot (62 km)
  3. Shorkot-Din Pur-Khanewal (64 km)
  4. Khanewal-Multan (45 km) – (later included Muzaffargarh thus making it 57 km long)

Moreover fifteen interchanges and 23 flyovers/underpasses are part of the project. Two major bridges on Ravi river and Sidhnai canal will also be built.
